What is Trenchless Pipe Repair

Traditional pipe repair requires excavating the ground around the pipe to get access to the pipe. Trenchless pipe repair only requires two holes to be dug, one on both sides of the pipe that requires repairing or replacing. A cable is then placed through the pipe. Depending on the condition of the pipe one of two types of trenchless pipe repair are used, pipe bursting and pipe lining.

Pipe bursting is the process of using the cable inserted into the pipe to pull a new pipe through the old pipe, bursting the old pipe outward. This is usually used in very damaged pipes that are collapsed and the cable can still fit inside of it.

Pipe lining uses the cable to pull a pipe liner through the pipe. This is also known as a cured in place pipe. A flexible resin liner tube is pulled through the pipe and then the liner is inflated to cover the inside of the pipe. The resin will then cure after a few hours and create a pipe inside the old damaged pipe. This will decrease the diameter of the affected pipe by a small amount but will not affect the pipe’s ability to flow. If the pipe is too damaged or has joints pipe lining may not be a viable option.
