Signs You Have a Clogged Drain

  • Your drains have water backing up out of them
  • Your drains run slowly or have pooling water around them
  • Bubbles form in your toilet when using the sink
  • When using a dishwasher or a washing machine, a gurgling noise emits from your drains
  • Your toilet overfills or clogs often
  • Your toilet has water around it
  • Bad smells coming from your kitchen sink, like the smell of rotting food

Steps to Clear a Clogged Drain

If you wish to try and clear the clogged drain yourself here are some steps you can take to try and clear the drain:

  • Fill your sink partially with water using your faucet
  • Using a plunger, try plunging the open drain
  • Remove the plunger and see how the drain is working, if it is still clogged repeat this process.
  • If you have a clogged sink with two drains such as a kitchen sink, block one of the drains with a wet rag
  • If you are trying to clear a clog in a bathroom sink, cover the overflow hole.

Some clogs are difficult to clear as they could be a result of years of grease, soap or mineral build up that can occur over time. These types of build ups can potentially cause damage to your pipes.

Using clog cleaning products can help but be careful if the product you work doesn’t work, don’t try and use a different product as it could react poorly together and release toxic fumes. Clog cleaning products can also cause damage to your pipes, and if your clog is not too serious you could use an enzyme drain cleaner which is not as strong but is more gentle on your pipes and on the environment. If the clog is not going away or you are worried about damage to your pipes, contact us today.
